Sewage treatment plant system design begins with an evaluation of the characteristics of the sewage to be treated. Sewage contains a large amount of organic matter that is toxic to humans and other species in sufficient concentrations. The purpose of sewage treatment plant system design is to remove these toxic substances from the effluent. In the process, millions of microorganisms are used for removing these toxins to make it less harmful and environment-friendly. Sewage contains a huge amount of organic matters which are toxic. Microorganisms are widely used in the sewage treatment plant for removing this toxic organic matter. Sewage or wastewater treatment plant consists of two stages.

Sewage treatment (or domestic wastewater treatment, municipal wastewater treatment) is a type of wastewater treatment which aims to remove contaminants from sewage to produce an effluent that is suitable for discharge to the surrounding environment or an intended reuse application, thereby preventing water pollution from raw sewage discharges.Sewage contains wastewater from households and businesses and possibly pre-treated industrial wastewater.
Sewage can be treated close to where the sewage is created, which may be called a "decentralized" system or even an "on-site" system (on-site sewage facility, septic tanks, etc.). Alternatively, sewage can be collected and transported by a network of pipes and pump stations to a municipal treatment plant. This is called a "centralized" system (see also sewerage and pipes and infrastructure).
A large number of sewage treatment technologies have been developed, mostly using biological treatment processes (see list of wastewater treatment technologies). Very broadly, they can be grouped into high tech (high cost) versus low tech (low cost) options, although some technologies might fall into either category. Other grouping classifications are "intensive" or "mechanized" systems (more compact, and frequently employing high tech options) versus "extensive" or "natural" or "nature-based" systems (usually using natural treatment processes and occupying larger areas) systems. This classification may be sometimes oversimplified, because a treatment plant may involve a combination of processes, and the interpretation of the concepts of high tech and low tech, intensive and extensive, mechanized and natural processes may vary from place to place.
The principal objective of wastewater treatment is generally to allow human and industrial effluents to be disposed of without danger to human health or unacceptable damage to the natural environment.

The primary stage removes large solids by grit chambers, while the secondary stage uses activated sludge to remove organic matter. Treated effluent can then be discharged directly to surface water such as rivers or further treated for reuse such as extracting methane gas from anaerobic digesters for use as fuel or fertilizing greenhouse crops with biosolids from GAC filters.

Varuna Recently developed an programmable logic controller (PLC) technology, however, have made the control of an SBR process readily achievable. The SBR process is an activated sludge process in which the sewage is introduced into a Reaction Tank (or SBR Tank), one batch at a time. Wastewater treatment is achieved by a timed sequence of operations which occur in the same SBR Tank, consisting of filling, reaction (aeration), settling, decanting, idling, and sludge wasting. The various stages in the sequence are as follows:
Stage 1: Filling:
During this stage the SBR Tank is filled with the in-fluent wastewater. In order to maintain suitable F/M (food to micro-organism) ratios, the wastewater should be admitted into the tank in a rapid, controlled manner. This method functions similarly to a selector, which encourages the growth of certain micro-organisms with better settling characteristics.
Stage 2: Reaction:
This stage involves the utilization of biochemical oxygen demand (BOD) and ammonia nitrogen, where applicable, by micro-organisms. The length of the aeration period and the sludge mass determines the degree of treatment. The length of the aeration period depends on the strength of the wastewater and the degree of nitrification (conversion of the ammonia to a less toxic form of nitrate or nitrite) provided for in the treatment.
Stage 3: Settling:
During this stage, aeration is stopped and the sludge settles leaving clear, treated effluent above the sludge blanket. Duration for settling varies from 45 to 60 minutes depending on the number of cycles per day.
Stage 4: Decanting:
At this stage of the process effluent is removed from the tank through the decanter, without disturbing the settled sludge.
Stage 5: Idling:
The SBR Tank waits idle until it is time to commence a new cycle with the filling stage.
Stage 6: Sludge Wasting:
Excess activated sludge is wasted periodically during the SBR operation. As with any activated sludge treatment process, sludge wasting is the main control of the effluent quality and micro-organism population size. This is how the operator exerts control over the effluent quality by adjusting the mixed suspended solids (MLSS) concentration and the Mean Cell Residence Time (MCRT).
In this process, the SBR Tank acts as the equivalent of several components in the conventional activated sludge treatment process, as follows:
Aeration Tank: the SBR Tank acts as an aeration tank during the reaction stage where the activated sludge is mixed with the in-fluent under aerated conditions.
Secondary Clarifier: the SBR Tank acts as a secondary clarifier during the settling and decanting stages where the mixed liquor is allowed to settle under quiescent conditions, and the overflow is discharged to the next stage of treatment.
Sludge Return System: the activated sludge, following settling in the SBR Tank, is mixed with the influent similar to the sludge return system, except that the feed is transferred to the sludge rather than the sludge being transferred to the front end of the plant.

Sewage is the wastewater from toilets, baths, showers, kitchens, and sinks draining into sewers. In many areas, sewage also includes liquid waste from industry and commerce. The main objective of a sewage treatment plant (septic tank) is to collect the water being produced in the house while separating suspended solids and floating matters in it. Our Sewage Treatment Plant units make use of physical processes like screening, comminution, grit removal, sedimentation and sedimentation along with minor biological processes to treat sewage efficiently.
The sewage (combination of black water and grey water) is treated by the home sewage treatment plant which involves following steps:
Primary treatment is the first stage in domestic sewage treatment plant, in which material such as grit, dirt, grease and all floating items present in sewage are removed. Grit removed from primary settler flows to grit chamber for storage. Secondary treatment is done in biological process to break down organic matter from human beings, in the liquid part of the sewage. When flow enters the secondary sedimentation tank, secondary sludge obtained during this step is combined with primary sludge for sludge processing. 80-90% of human waste and other solids are removed after this stage.In the tertiary stage of domestic wastewater treatment plant specific organic constituents, including phosphates, nitrates and ammonia are removed. Sometimes it will also be treated with a disinfection process using UV light, chlorination or ozone treatment to remove bacteria and viruses.
